Why the FM number is not cutting width
Shoppers search “54-inch Woodmaxx” and get an FM-54 that cuts 47″. MechMaxx model numbers match cut width. Woodmaxx FM numbers do not. Size to the published cutting width and your PTO horsepower, not the digits after FM-.
Overall width is the number that matters for gates and trailer ramps. FM-54 is 56″ overall. FM-62/H is 65″. FM-78/H is 80″. FM-96H is 96.5″. Confirm the gate before you confirm the cut.

Woodmaxx hydraulic side shift vs standard FM
FM-62H adds about $600 and 75 lb of machine weight over FM-62 for the same 55″ deck. FM-78H is the same trade on the 70″ deck. Worth it when you regularly mow fence lines, pond edges on level ground, or orchard rows. Skip it for open pasture.
Hydraulic side shift is not ditch-bank geometry. The head stays level and slides left or right. If the tractor has to stay on the crown while the deck drops into a ditch, that job is MechMaxx VAM, not an FM-H.

Hammer blades vs Y-blades on Woodmaxx FM
Woodmaxx forges hammer blades from 40Cr alloy (AISI 5140 class) at about 1.85 lb each on FM-62/78, and 2.5 lb on FM-96H. Y-blades are 60Si2Mn spring steel. Hammers for brush and small saplings. Y-blades for a finer grass finish.
The rotor is built for one style. Woodmaxx states hammer and Y setups are not interchangeable after purchase. Replacement kits exist if you stay in the same family. MechMaxx EFS, NAM, VAM, and KDK SKUs in our catalog ship hammers only.

Woodmaxx flail mower warranty
Woodmaxx publishes a minimum 2-year parts warranty on equipment. Labor is not covered. Their published process is phone diagnosis with repair parts shipped first; photos or video may be required. Claim process: Woodmaxx returns and warranty page. Length by product class, including FM-series 2 years from original purchase, is on Woodmaxx’s warranty page.
- Parts, not labor. No payment for your time or a shop’s time to fit the part.
- Wear items excluded. Belts, knives, and hydraulic hoses are called out as exclusions. Electrical 60 days. Hoses 30 days. PTO shafts 90 days from delivery.
- Not for rental fleets. Commercial and rental use are outside the published warranty. Cosmetic powder-coat marks are not covered.
- Returns are discretionary. Buyer’s remorse after arrival is a 15% restock path on the returns page, not a free send-back.
Woodmaxx Power Equipment Ltd. was founded in 2008 in Akron, New York, and was acquired in January 2025 by longtime employees who formed The Back Forty Group. Factory-direct means you call New York instead of a local dealer parts counter. That is the support trade versus a Land Pride or Bush Hog bay.

Woodmaxx vs MechMaxx flail mowers
Woodmaxx is one FM series with denser mid-size decks, Y-blade choice, and 2 years parts. MechMaxx is five series (EFS, NAM, NAM-H, VAM, KDK), hammer-only rotors, a published 1-year machine warranty, and the only ditch-bank heads we cover.
FM-62 vs EFS60 is the mid-size fork: heavier rotor and 2-year parts versus 5″ more cut and a much lower sticker. NAM72 vs FM-78 is the width-per-dollar fork at 70–72″. VAM is not an FM-H substitute.

What Woodmaxx flail mowers are available?+
Woodmaxx currently lists six FM-series 3-point PTO flails: FM-54 (47″), FM-62 and FM-62H (55″), FM-78 and FM-78H (70″), and FM-96H (85″). H-suffix models add hydraulic side shift. There is no Woodmaxx ditch-bank / tilt flail in this lineup.
Is the Woodmaxx model number the cutting width?+
No. FM-54 cuts 47″, FM-62 and FM-62H cut 55″, FM-78 and FM-78H cut 70″, and FM-96H cuts 85″. The number is larger than the cut on every FM we spec-check. Overall width is wider still (FM-54 is 56″ overall; FM-96H is 96.5″).
Do Woodmaxx flail mowers need hydraulic remotes?+
Only the H models. FM-54, FM-62, and FM-78 run on PTO and the 3-point hitch with no remotes. FM-62H, FM-78H, and FM-96H need at least one rear remote pair. Woodmaxx includes 1/2″ NPT quick-connect fittings on those decks; they do not supply tractor remotes. H shift is lateral. It does not tilt down a bank.
What warranty do Woodmaxx flail mowers include?+
Woodmaxx publishes a minimum 2-year parts warranty on equipment. Labor is not covered. Their published process is phone diagnosis with repair parts shipped first; photos or video may be required. Belts and knives are excluded. Hydraulic hoses are listed both as a 30-day item and as an exclusion; do not treat hoses as 2-year coverage. Should I order hammer blades or Y-blades?+
Order hammers for brush, briars, and saplings about 1″ or smaller. Order Y-blades for grass and pasture finish. Woodmaxx sets the rotor at purchase. Hammer and Y kits are not interchangeable later, even though replacement sets are sold. Every FM in our catalog offers that choice.
Are Woodmaxx flail mowers made in the USA?+
Woodmaxx Power Equipment Ltd. is headquartered in Akron, New York, and has sold factory-direct since 2008. The FM category on woodmaxx.com lists manufacturing origin as imported. Treat Akron as the support and shipping hub, not as a claim that the deck is US-welded.

Buy Woodmaxx when you want 2 years parts coverage, hammer or Y-blade choice at order, and a denser mid-size FM build. Buy MechMaxx when sale price and series breadth matter more, including ditch-bank VAM heads Woodmaxx does not sell.
