Woodmaxx FM-62H review

Woodmaxx positions the FM-62H as a 55″ cutting-width hydraulic flail with about 65″ overall width, built for Category 1 three-point hitches on tractors in the 20–45 HP band. The “H” means hydraulic side shift: the deck can slide left or right under remote control so you can keep the tractor on firmer ground while the cutter reaches under limbs or along a fence.

You choose hammer blades or Y-blades when you buy. That choice is permanent for the rotor setup. Woodmaxx does not treat the kits as drop-in swaps later, so match the blade package to how you actually mow, not to a maybe-someday use case.

Hydraulic side shift is the reason most buyers pay up from the non-H FM-62. Published offsets differ depending on whether the deck is shifted left or right (roughly 36″ left / 29″ right when shifted left, and about 22.5″ left / 43″ right when shifted right). Plan around the direction you need most often. Fence lines and tree lines are rarely symmetric.

You need a rear remote pair to run the cylinder. If your compact only has mid-mount remotes, budget for a rear kit or skip hydraulic shift and look at a fixed-offset or lighter model. Owners who already have remotes consistently call the shift the feature that makes the machine worth owning for property edges.

Hammer blades (18 hammers on this size, about 1.85 lb each) are the brush and sapling package. Owner reports on Woodmaxx’s page describe clearing multi-year growth and knocking down saplings in the 1–2.5″ class when you take your time. Expect a mulched, utilitarian finish, not a fairway. Owner theme: tall grass is easy when paced; some also report clippings packing under the deck in heavy cuts, so plan cleaning stops.

Y-blades (36 knives) are the lawn and pasture finish option. Reviews that compare both styles on Woodmaxx flails describe a much cleaner cut, closer to a finishing mower, while still handling light brush if you do not push diameter. If your primary job is keeping a large yard or orchard floor tidy, order Y-blades from the start.

The published build stack is serious for the price: 5″ rotor at about 2160 RPM, triple BX39 Gates belts, reverse rotor rotation, over-running clutch, NSK bearings, and a 5.25″ rear roller. Cutting height ranges from roughly ¾″ to 3¾″. Machine weight is about 716 lb (around 860 lb shipping), so confirm your compact’s three-point capacity and ballast needs before you buy.

Heavy brush use means checking hammer hardware. Several owners note that bolts and nuts can loosen after hard sessions. Inspect after the first few hours and after any big clearing day. Gearbox oil and a ½″ NPT quick-connect come in the box; still verify oil level before the first run.

Against the non-hydraulic FM-62, you trade money and remote complexity for reach you can adjust from the seat. If you never work fence lines or tree skirts, the standard FM-62 is the simpler buy.

Against larger Woodmaxx H models (FM-78H, FM-96H), the 62H stays easier to place in tight yards and on lighter tractors. Against NAM68H, the split is 55″ PTO-edge geometry versus 68″ plus 16″ of slider travel, not the same offset job.
