What hammer blades do on a flail mower
Hammer blades are short, weighted flails that pivot on the drum. Their mass delivers impact force into brush, briars, and thick grass. On a Woodmaxx FM-62, the published hammer package is 18 hammers at about 1.85 lb each. The wider FM-78 uses 22 hammers at about 1.85 lb each. The Cat 2 FM-96H steps up to about 2.5 lb hammers.
Owner themes on Woodmaxx hammer decks describe clearing multi-year growth and saplings roughly in the 1-2.5″ class when ground speed stays honest. Expect a mulched utility finish, not a fairway. That is the right trade when woody material is part of the weekly job.
MechMaxx value flails also use hammers, but lighter ones: the EFS60 lists 24 cast-steel hammers at about 0.8 lb each, with a published material limit around 0.75″ diameter. The NAM72 moves up to 28 hammers at about 1.8 lb each for utility-tractor work.
What Y-blades do on a flail mower
Y-blades (knife blades) are shaped like a Y and cut with a slicing action rather than heavy impact. Woodmaxx lists 36 Y-blades on the FM-62 class and 36 on the FM-54. Wider FM-78 descriptions include 44 knives plus center blades; the FM-96H lists 72 knives.
Owner themes describe Y-blade Woodmaxx flails as much cleaner in grass, closer to a finishing mower when material is light. They still handle thick grass and light brush if you do not push diameter. They are the wrong order if saplings and briars are the main workload.

Y-blades shift the wear to cutting edges. They stay happier on grass and wet pasture. Push them into woody stems or rocky debris and you replace knives sooner. Either package still needs belt, bearing, and roller checks; blade choice does not remove driveline maintenance.

Order for the dominant weekly job, not the once-a-year edge case. A hammer deck that can also mow grass is usually easier to live with than a Y-blade deck forced into brush.
