Match the head to whether the ground under the tractor is already the cut plane. If it is not, FM-78H cannot follow the slope. If it is, VAM65 is the wrong hydraulic package.
Buy the VAM65 if…
- + The tractor must stay on the shoulder while the head follows an embankment.
- + Vegetation is green or tender grass. MechMaxx forbids tall grass, shrubs, vines, and brambles.
- + You have two rear remote pairs and will live with 0.9 lb hammers (~25.2 lb total) at $2,999.
Buy the FM-78H if…
- + You want 70″ of cut (the 78 is the name) plus seat-controlled side shift on level ground.
- + Y-blades, a slip clutch, and a 2-year warranty matter more than tilt.
- + You have one remote and lift for an 804 lb machine. If 45+ PTO HP and hammer-only is fine, also look at NAM72H.

Will the FM-78H mow a ditch bank?
No. FM-78H does not tilt. Woodmaxx publishes cut-edge-from-PTO numbers that change when the deck is shifted left versus right. Those inches stay on the tractor’s plane. VAM65 is the ditch-bank SKU: up to 85″ from center with 90° up / 60° down articulation.
The price gap runs the other way from the “cheap offset” story. VAM65 lists at $2,999. FM-78H lists at $4,620, about $1,621 more, for a 70″ no-tilt H. If the bank drops away, the extra money does not buy you a slope.

Can VAM65 cut brush like an FM-78H?
MechMaxx says no. The VAM caveat limits the head to green or tender grass. Steel matches the warning: 28 hammers at 0.9 lb (~25.2 lb total) on a 4.3″ rotor. FM-78H lists 22 duckfoot hammers at about 1.85 lb (~40.7 lb) on a 5″ rotor, or 44 Y-blades at order. Hammers and Y-blades are not interchangeable after you buy.
BillieS’s May 2026 Green Tractor Talk follow-up is the VAM65 field report this catalog did not invent. Mixed 2–3 ft grass, saplings, and briars “mowed pretty decent,” then three hammer bolts failed on the first pass. Treat that as a caution on mixed woody growth, not as a spec-desk test of either deck.
What FM-78H owners actually disagree about
Green Tractor Talk is not a Woodmaxx brochure. One May 2023 owner of the 78H had a first-use failure from factory belts set too tight, bought bearings and belts, then still said they would buy it again. Hammers in 12″ grass “almost looks like a finish mower cut.” A second 78H owner who ordered Y-blades also said they would buy again.
The October 2023 post is the other pole. That owner said the hydraulic slide rod arrived rusty, the slide fell apart within a year, and the metal-to-metal tensioner pivot seized and ate belts. Skids ripped turf on turns. Grass piled inside the deck. Woodmaxx resolved the issues promptly. The same owner still wished they had bought a brush hog instead of the FM-78H.
Product-page reviews run warmer: Jason Fiori on an L3901 (August 2025) said the 78H used less HP than a 5-foot rotary; Trygve Teigen (June 2026) said bristly locust on 60 acres of pasture stayed down 1 to 2 years versus a rotary. Those are manufacturer-hosted reviews, not independent forum threads. Weigh them with the GTT split, not instead of it.
